It is however crucial to note that condoms offer the best STD protection. In order to be effective the condom must be used correctly and every single time during intercourse. You should however keep in mind that even when used correctly, condoms offer no protection against STDs spread via sores on the skin (such as genital warts ) if the affected area is not completely covered by the condom.
Condoms (both male and female) are however extremely effective at providing protection against STIs that are transmitted via bodily fluids in the form, semen and vaginal fluid. Condoms act as a barrier and can protect you against diseases such as HIV, gonorrhea, chlamydia and syphilis.

Even though these condom offer protection against conception, they do not offer protect against STIs. Individuals who have latex allergies should rather use polyurethane condoms. Even though they are a little more costly they offer a better fit and similar protection as latex condoms against conception and STIs.
If a condom breaks during intercourse, stop intercourse immediately and remove the broken condom. If there is a chance that one or both the partners is STD positive, consult a medical professional as soon as possible. The physician will perform the necessary tests and advise you on possible STD signs and symptoms. If conception is a concern, the doctor will most probably prescribe emergency contraception pills or insert an intrauterine device (IUD). These can help prevent pregnancy when used early after a condom flops.
While condoms are not perfect, if you're going to have intercourse, they are the best tool to protect yourself, even if you are using other birth control methods.
